Visiting Varna

Bulgaria

Varna is Bulgaria's third largest city. In itself, the city is a beautiful and pleasant place, radiating out from an ancient centre, featuring great historical architecture interspersed with large green spaces. This can also be a starting point for for an excursion to the Black Sea coastline. Many tourists love Varna's seaside as a great place to stay. The sandy beaches, good restaurants and improving facilities continue to make the area increasingly attractive to all.

One of the largest ports and tourism centres of the Black Sea is located in the middle of the Varna Bay. It was founded in the 6th century B.C., later the city called Odessos was inhabited by the Greeks.

Its Roman monuments include the remains of the 2ndcentury baths and the Roman Tower. You can also visit the traces of the Greek settlement, and the downtown, built on the hillside to see the two reconstructed Balkan-style houses. The 17th-century St Bogorodica (Our Lady) church is now a temple-museum, and the neobyzantine-style Uspenice Bogorodichno cathedral is also a remarkable landmark.

From the port a wide sandy beach stretches to the North. Varna's beaches and promenade starts here, but you can also find the Maritime Museum, some naval memories and gigantic anchors. Not far away, the Aquarium lets you see the deep sea's mysterious life.
